How To Be A Good Racer

From here. 1. Smile and say hi to everyone, locals and racers alike. Happy racers are friendly racers are good racers are a benefit of the race. 2. DON’T pee in public. Just don’t. In my races someone that pees in public forfeits their entry, prize, points, everything. Use the portapotties. Promoters pay for them, you might as well use them. If there aren’t enough then mention it to the promoter. Trust me, the promoter would much rather spring for another portapottie than risk losing the race. 3. Change discretely. Imagine an (stranger) 8 year old boy or girl standing in the vicinity when you’re changing. Is what you’re doing appropriate to do in front of them? If not then make it so. Cover up, close a door, whatever it takes. 4. Buy your food/fuel in town and post it on Facebook or Twitter wherever. The host town is hoping that by allowing the race to happen that they get some people to spend money in town, Facebook stuff, all that. A tired but happy racer chowing down is a great image too, for your sponsors and friends. 5. DON’T swear, at least too loudly. It’s against the rules and for a reason – dropping F-bombs and such doesn’t go over well with parents trying to do right by their kids. I figure five things is a nice, sweet list. Short and simple. If we all work together we can grow the sport. Yeah, promoters have to do whatever to hold races, and I understand that many/most of us racers have no interest in promoting a race. That’s fine –...

2015 Updates – Bethel, schedule, etc

Sorry for all the confusion this spring. Our goal is to have two races at Bethel, March 15 and 22, and then two races at New Britain, March 29 and April 12. March 15 and 22 will be formatted just like the races previously held there under the Bethel Spring Series name. The tentative March 15 race is here on BikeReg. The tentative March 22 race is here on BikeReg. March 29 and April 12 will be held in New Britain, with details at BikeReg here and here. Here is what happened so far: 1. Rentschler Field has too much snow and the cost to plow it negated any possibility of holding races there. This meant we would not be able to hold races at the Rent on March 15 and 22. 2. The reason for ending the Bethel Spring Series in 2014 was the traffic generated by one business located on the Bethel venue. That business temporarily shut down after its roof collapsed. Therefore it allowed us to look at Bethel once again, for the March 15 and 22 dates. The town has been 100% supportive of having races on that loop, and we’ve been in regular contact with the town administration since the April 2014 regarding holding races there. 3. The town needs to hold an emergency meeting to give us permission to hold the race. That meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 10. Until then we’ve closed registration for the March 15 and 22 dates on BikeReg. If we get permission we’ll re-open it. If not we’ll cancel the March 15 and 22 races and refund any...
